This is a follow-up on my loose baffle message.
It turns out it wasn't a fitting at the front of the muffler that was coming loose. It was the whole assembly at the back, the part that the rings and endcap bolt into! The thing is tilted at an angle, half in and half out of the muffler. The top of the muffle at the spot where the assembly was probably welded had been bluing for some months. It apparently burned through.
After just 5000 miles, that's really poor quality.
